City Tour of Nairobi
Nairobi National Museum
Giraffe Center
Bomas of Kenya

Day 1 - Nairobi National Park, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Karen Blixen Museum, and Kazuri Beads Factory.

Start your 2-days memorable Nairobi sightseeing itinerary with the untamed wilderness at the Nairobi National Park. It is located within the city, a mere 20-minutes’ drive away. I would suggest that you start early between 6:00 to 6:30 am as this is the best time for game viewing. At this particular time the animals’ reconnaissance the field for their meal of the day. Like us humans, they also need a hearty breakfast to start off their day.

The park is home to many animals. The easiest to spot are; giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, baboons, and gazelles. You can also occasionally see, lions, buffalos, hyenas, and hippos.

Furthermore, if you had seen a shooting star the night before, are superstitious, and one of the lucky ones, then you might get an opportunity to see a leopard, cheetah, or black rhino. It is rare to see these animals in this park, but not impossible.

Sometimes the experienced drivers/guides keep a lookout for vultures and hyenas as this indicates to them that there is a kill not far off. Again, depending on your lucky star, you might get to see a pride of lions enjoying their morning breakfast. The scene will definitely remind you of the movie, “The Lion King.”

2nd Stop

After your safari adventure, head off to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Their orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program is the most successful in the world. They are open to the public only for an hour, from 11:00 am to noon. During this time the orphan elephants are brought out for their midday mud bath and feeding. It is a picture-perfect moment. You will also learn about the orphaned baby elephants and how they are rehabilitated and then reintegrated into the wild.

I guarantee that after you see these babies, many of your hearts will get inflated with love for them. For all animal lovers out there, you also have an opportunity to adopt an elephant or a rhino. Adopting one of these animals will only cost you USD50.00 per year. By adopting, not only do you become a proud father or mother, but you also get a personalized certificate of adoption along with other goodies. Check out their site for further details.

3rd & 4th Stop

After your melancholic goodbye to the babies, head off to the Karen Blixen Museum, which is a 10 km drive from Nairobi. If you have watched, cried, and loved the movie, ‘Out of Africa’ then you would want to visit this museum in a farmhouse, where the famous author, Karen Blixen, lived between the periods of 1914 and 1931.

She left this home of her’s after a series of tragedies, and this spectacular home with picturesque views of the Ngong Hills was then converted into a museum. People who know something about Blixen, or when they think about her, remember her famous phrase about her memories of the Ngong Hills, “I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills.”

Stomach Growling For Food

Take a break. Right next door to the Karen Blixen Museum is the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. They serve light lunches and pizza. It is not a Michelin star restaurant, however, the food is of a good standard, and most certainly palatable.

Before leaving this area, you must visit the Kazuri Beads Factory. The factory is located in what used to be part of the Karen Blixen Estate. Kazuri, in Swahili means ‘small and beautiful.’ This project began in 1975, by two single mothers. They started it as a small workshop for making handmade beads. They soon realized that there were many other women in different villages who needed regular employment. Today, the Kazuri factory has more than 340 women skilled in crafting ceramic beads which are strung into artistic, beautifully unique jewelry designs. These jewelry pieces are bought by locals and international travelers who visit the factory.

Day 2 - City Tour of Nairobi, Nairobi National Museum, Giraffe Center, Bomas of Kenya

1st & 2nd Stop

You should start your city tour by 9:00 am. Generally, this tour begins by taking you into the Nairobi Central Business District. Here you can see the Parliament buildings, The Kenyatta International Conference Centre, the city market area, and the site of 1998, USA Embassy bomb blast. Thereafter, you should continue to the Nairobi National Museum, which is located at the Museum Hill, surrounded by botanical gardens. This museum celebrates Kenya’s rich heritage and here you will also find a variety of shopping and dining facilities within the Museum itself. So don’t forget to take a break while you’re there and enjoy your aromatic Kenyan coffee, while breathing in the serene environment surrounding you.

3rd Stop

Next head off to the Giraffe Center which is a 40-minutes drive from Nairobi city center. It was started as a rehabilitation project to rescue the Rothschild Giraffe. Here, you will be able to indulge in the experience of a lifetime as you will get the opportunity to feed these majestic creatures. The feeding timing is from 9:00 to 17:00. Moreover, at the Giraffe Center, you will also find a nature sanctuary trail, which you can take for a stroll, or if you enjoy hiking, then you may as well indulge in the latter instead. After you have burnt a few calories, then return to the Tea House at the center for some refreshments, and don’t forget to stop at the Daisy Zoovenir Shop to buy some mementos, too!

4th Stop

To conclude your day, head off to your last stop, the Bomas of Kenya. (Refer to the show timings mentioned below). It is located 10 km from the Nairobi city center. The word ‘Bomas’ was derived from “Boma”, a Swahili word for ‘enclosed homestead.’ Now in Kenya, there are now many “Bomas” villages and each one represents a major ethnic group.

During the time when we used to live in Nairobi, I remember that whenever a guest would visit our family from abroad, my parents made sure that we took them to see the exciting traditional dances and the acrobatic show at the ‘Bomas of Kenya.’

Besides the dances, they also incorporate a story into the show and the two most distinctive parts of the show that I remember are; The Maasai marriage and the ‘witch doctor.’ This energetic, medicinal man pops out in the middle of the performance when you least expect him and if you are sitting in the first row then do get ready for a jumpy scare as he prances across the auditorium stage floor and comes right up to your face.

After the captivating show, feel free to take a stroll to an area within the ‘Bomas’ parameters which depicts a village where women are sitting on the ground with their legs stretched out, selling African artifacts.

Nairobi National Museum – Timing 8:30 to 17:30 daily / Giraffe Center – Timing 9:00 to 17:00, open daily, including public holidays / Bombas of Kenya – Timing 14:30 to 16:00 on weekdays and  15:30 to 17:15 during weekends and public holidays.
Bon Voyage!

When Is The Best Time to Visit Kenya?

Kenya can be visited year-round. However, it is best to visit during the dry season. The recommended months are January, February, and then from June to October.

If you visit during the rainy season, April, May, November and December, then your game viewing schedule might get altered by your safari organizers and the terrain quality in the park is not the best. I have heard of safari vehicles getting stuck in the mud.

However, one positive aspect of traveling during the low season is that, overall you can get a better package deal, as low season rates are applicable during this time. Though I must add that, even though there is rainfall in December, due to Christmas and New Year holidays, the rates are not reduced. Instead, it is the opposite as resorts and lodges, they add a surcharge on 24th December, Christmas Eve, and on 31st December, New Year’s Eve. In addition, during this time some places also impose a minimum number of nights policy.
