Red Buttock Baboons Of Kenya

Red buttock baboons are an inherent part of Kenya. They are easily found in troops on highways and national parks.

Let me ask you a simple question. When you think of baboons, what comes to your mind? Hmm! My mind instantly thinks of their snarl with their long, sharp teeth. Their theatrical antics and their red buttocks.

If I were to shut my eyes and choose a destination I would like to revisit. Without hesitation, it would be Kenya. What is there not to fall in love with!

I have never been a fan of sweltering temperature therefore, Kenya with its stupendous climate with plenty of rainfall is sublime for me. To be more precise, my revisit would start by moi arriving in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. I would spend a night there before venturing out to some of my favorite national parks. During the safaris, I would also not forget to meet with my daring warriors, the Maasai. Lastly, my voyage would not be complete without the scenic overnight train journey from Nairobi to Mombasa.

Ooh, La La! As I am writing this, I felt the breezy breeze on my face. I imagined myself once again walking on Diani Beach in Mombasa, during the sunset, sunrise and enjoying the scrumptious feast offered at the resort.

Oh, wait! There is something else which I must tell you before I chitter-chatter about the red buttock baboons of Kenya. The red soil. Yes, in Kenya the soil is red, which is great for the growth of grass and crops. No wonder, they have an abundance of lush green land. Let you in on a small secret of mine, I always wanted to steal a bag full of it and keep it in a pot at home. No, I am not a thief, I just love the color and the smooth feel of it on my fingertips. Above all, whenever I would smell or see it, it would bring back memories of Kenya. My secret is no longer a secret! LOL!

The smart adults always discourage their young kids from going too close to these devilish creatures who have been known to snatch things out of a hand. Maybe, the hand holding the tempting treat is too hard for them to resist.

You can see these naughty red buttock mamas when you travel by road in Kenya. They can be seen in national parks and on highways.  Always hungry for food.

Close & Personal.

It was during one of our road trips from Nairobi to Mombasa, when we had the pleasure of meeting this red buttock mama, up close & personal.

Our car needed fuel, so we stopped at a gas station for a refill and to relieve our bladders as we still had a few hours to go before reaching our destination. As our fuel tank was getting filled, we saw a troop of baboons sitting across the road. Some were merely scampering, a few were searching for morsels of food, one or two were busy trying to grab lies off each other while a few were busy bullying each other. What great performers they are!

Amidst all this, a red buttock mama wanted more. Intelligently she looked right and left before crossing the road and ran towards our car. We all quickly rolled up our car windows as we didn’t want any unfortunate incident to happen. The she-devil without any hesitation jumped on to our car bonnet and started making faces at us through the windscreen. It was quite hilarious.

Curtain time.

Our entertaining driver, Alfred decided to entice her with a sweet. So, he carefully rolled down his window and through the little gap offered a sweet as a token of friendship. The baboon immediately snatched on to the treat and in an entertaining manner started to unwrap the sweet. I was certain that she had done this before.

Once she had unwrapped the sweet, she sat against the windscreen with her red buttock in our faces, ignoring our laughter and relishing her treat. As she sat licking and making smacking sounds, another two mammas also decided to join her. Alfred thought to throw few sweets on the ground so all of them could get a share and we all could get, “Three red buttocks’ baboon show,” for free.

Wish I had dental floss or toothpick to get this damn sweet gobbet out of my teeth!

Time to say goodbye.

The goodies finished and so did their performance of sitting with their butts against our windscreen, eating sweets, picking and eating lies off each other. All of it came to an abrupt end.
